Designing Your Advert: Get Your Creative Juices Flowing!

2018-12-18

Whilst out of home advertising is a great way to market your business, it’s only as good as the ads you use. Create an advert that doesn’t contain all the information it should, blends into the background, or just doesn’t resonate with your customers and you’re not going to see the positive results you want. But, design an ad which works well for its purpose and target audience and you’ll be onto a winning campaign!
To help you out, our team of out of home advertising specialists at Focus Media Outdoor have put together some tips to creating a great ad that you should take on board.

Make It Clear Who You Are

You always want your audience to know who you are and what you do on your ad. This is why if you don’t have a company name that explains just that, we always advise to incorporate it in somehow. So, for example, if a construction company is called ‘John Smith & Co.’, on your ad it’s wise to add to it, creating something like ‘John Smith & Co. Building Construction’. Your audience will be able to quickly understand who you are and what you’re advertising.

Prioritise Your Font Size

Never have an out of home ad that keeps all of its font the same size – that’s a big no! Instead, prioritize the importance of your information in relation to the size you use. So, if you want your company name to be seen first, put it in the biggest font, with the tag line slightly smaller, and contact details a little smaller than that.

Contrasting Colours

You want your advert to be easy to read, so make sure you choose a font and background colour that contrasts well. The best mix is a lighter background and dark font, making your writing stand out.

Leave Some Space

One of the worst things you can do on your advert is overcrowd it, either with words, images, or colour. Remember that a cluttered ad is just going to make it harder for your audience to pick out the key information. Keep areas where the background is plain, stick to only the vital details you need your customer to know, and have simplicity on your mind when designing.

Have Some Fun!

A great way to catch the attention of your audience on a dreary Monday morning is to have some fun with your advert. Use bold colours, have a funny tagline, or do something different that makes people look twice. Making a unique advert that offers a level of entertainment is a great way of standing out from the crowd and will also make your company seem more personable and friendlier.

Give Something Back

No one can resist a freebie, so why not offer your audience something? They could scan a QR code if you’re an online shop to receive a free gift or enter a code to get money off. If you don’t sell your products or services online, you could ask your audience to take a picture of the ad which they can show to you for a discount or direct them to social media for offers and freebies. It’s a great way to get your audience to engage with your ad, and a very successful call to action idea!
